If ACICS is shut down, then 243 schools with about 900 total campuses could lose their access to federal money if they are not quickly accredited by a different organization.

Dear CalUMS Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I am writing you with an update on an important issue that is today affecting the U.S. secondary educational community.

As you likely know, CalUMS is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). ACICS is the largest national accrediting organization of degree granting institutions, with oversight of 245 institutions, an additional 674 campus locations, and a student population exceeding 800,000 people.

Unfortunately, in recent years, several schools accredited by ACICS have engaged in unprofessional behavior, resulting in additional scrutiny directed toward the agency. In the aftermath of this review, Department of Education staff have recommended withdrawal of ACICS's authority to certify colleges and schools. This past Thursday evening, the Advisory Committee that oversees accreditation agencies voted to support this recommendation. For more information on this vote, please visit http://tinyurl.com/z3gkw6k.

This recommendation will be forwarded to the Secretary of Education, who will serve as the final decisionmaker on ACICS's authority. We believe that the Secretary will concur with the recommendation and will likely withdraw ACICS's authority. At that time, CalUMS's accreditation will automatically extend 18 months to give us time to recertify with a different agency. We also anticipate legal action by ACICS to ask the courts to defer or overturn any withdrawal of authority by the Department of Education.

We have been aware of this developing situation, and had already begun the process of certification with another agency when last week's decision was made. We will continue this effort, and look forward to a smooth process as we work to add accreditation by the new agency.

As described above, this situation affects over 900 campuses nationally, including Stratford University, Virginia International University, and Iglobal University. While this will play out over coming years, we wanted to let you know immediately of last week's news and the steps we are taking to address.

If you would like additional information, I will hold information sessions to discuss further. These sessions will be held in the newly opened second floor space on Thursday June 30 at 11:00am, and Thursday July 7 at 1:00pm. We look forward to answering any questions you might have.

Respectfully,
Ken Gordon
Interim Academic Dean
