The doctors have also recommended about three weeks of crate rest and the puppy is currently being fostered by a friend of animal welfare activists.

The two medical students, who tortured a puppy and flung her off a high-rise building, surrendered before the city police on Wednesday. They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court where they obtained a bail of Rs. 10,000.

Sources said the students of Madha Medical College — Gautham Sudharshan and Ashish Paul, have been suspended from the college.

Meanwhile, being thrown off the terrace of a multi-storey building did not deter the physical or mental spirit of ‘Bhadra’.

Having christened her ‘Bhadra’ (the warrior), to celebrate her fighting spirit, Animal Welfare activists Shravan Krishnan, Antony Rubin and Jennifer Jacob Murali Anand took the puppy to the Madras Veterinary College in Vepery for a check-up. “She has two fractures — one is near her spine and the other is on the right hind leg. Luckily her spinal column is still in tact despite the fall and since the injuries are over two weeks old, the bones have begun to set. The doctors have bound her leg and her back so that the bones set properly and she is also being given calcium and vitamin supplements,” said Ms. Jennifer.

Bhadra was found late on Tuesday night in Kundrathur not very far from where the incident had taken place. Locals there had noticed her injuries and had been feeding her. Subsequently, they contacted the police.

Demand for better laws

Even as the two medical students were let out on bail, social media users called for amendments to the Prevention of Cruelty against Animals Act which only imposes Rs. 50 as fine for people who harm animals.

Bro!!! Im not against dog lovers... But why do ppl give more importance to dogs than other animals lets say goats... Just because they show love to u back doesnt mean they r different from other animals... Ppl wont say anything if an ant dies, a mosquito dies, a hen dies, a sheep dies, all these r atleast better than dogs that they dont bark at u if u walk in the streets at night... Hypocrisy of dog lovers... By the way im not against cruelty to any animal... If a person injuring a dog gets a 5yr punishment then a person slaughtering sheep should also get the same... It will have more pain that that dog...

if a mosquito doesn't we may die from Malaria and dengue

I am a vegetarian and talking about the slaughtering of animals I am also against that. So ppl who eat non veg has to decide whether its wrong or right to slaughter the animals
