When a detective had a longer conversation with Kurremula, the affidavit said, he said he was holding a knife because he had been cooking and then tripped on Gundam’s leg before falling and stabbing him, the affidavit said. Kurremula told officers he and Gundam were having “a casual argument about which of their fathers in India was doing better” and he went out on the balcony, carrying the knife, to confront Gundam about the argument. He said he only wanted to scare Gundam and, by the time he talked to the detective, “he knew he was in a lot of trouble,” the affidavit said. One of Gundam’s friends was also at the apartment at the time. He told officers he had been drunk and was asleep by the time Gundam was stabbed, Kurremula’s affidavit said. He woke up when he heard someone screaming and found Gundam wounded and Kurremula panicking.
