I don't know any formal training but people with Java/.net background really don't need any paid training to learn salesforce. Free materials available online is more than enough.

Most of the salesforce developers I have seen are either with Java or .net or Siebel background.  If your friend works hard, he should get job in 2-3 months. Good luck!
