The USA has a two party democratic government.The two parties are the Republicans  and the Democrats.The democratic party was originally known as the Jefferson's republicans after it's founder Thomas Jefferson in 1824.

During the civil war,a rift grew within the party between those who supported slavery and those who opposed it.This deep division led to the formation of the new Democratic party,the one we know today.The party adopted donkey as it's symbol.

The Republican party came into existence just prior to the civil war due to their long stance in favor of abolition of slavery. In 1860 ,they became an established political party after their candidate Abraham Lincoln was elected as the president of the USA.

They adopted the elephant as their symbol in 1874 based on a cartoon in Harper's weekly which described their party as an elephant.
