epic takedown of the 'Rajnikanth phenomenon', by my favourite Madras writer.

A bit harsh though, given Rajnikanth actually featured in many offbeat films before he became a star in the 90s, and can act better than almost all Tamil actors.

unless you were born in TN, its hard to explain how fake this entire Rajni mania is.

especially after upper classes appropriated him. I don't think that writer touched upon that point.

What actually nobody knows is, why are the multiplex crowds behaving like the poorer fans of rajnikanth.

Rajni is acceptable to all, he's uncontroversial, means, anyone can appropriate his name, and do overaction.

that is what is happening.

I don't think Rajni actually has fans now, the way Vijay and Ajith have. His time was in the 90s.
