HIGHLIGHTS 1PV Sindhu became first Indian shuttler to win silver in badminton 2India have secured their second medal in Rio 2016 3Sindhu is fifth Indian female athlete to win individual medal India's PV Sindhu won a historic silver medal at the Rio Olympics 2016 after she lost to world No.1 Carolina Marin 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 in the woman's badminton singles final. The 21-year-old Sindhu's hard-fought silver was India's second medal of the Rio Olympics after female wrestler Sakshi Malik claimed bronze in the women's 58kg freestyle wrestling event on Wednesday. "I never thought I would make it this far. Overall I am on cloud nine at the moment, this feels amazing," Sindhu told reporters. The Indian shuttler went down fighting after winning the opening game. In the second game, World No.1 Marin was on the offensive as she put Sindhu under immense pressure. Sindhu fought back with some good backhand rallies but Marin closed the game out 21-12. In the third game, both players did not yield an inch and at 10-10, it could have been anyone's game. However, Marin's experience helped her win the big points as Sindhu struggled at the net. In the end, Marin won the third game 21-15 to become the first European shuttler to win gold in badminton. Sindhu is the fifth Indian woman to win an individual medal in the Olympics after Karnam Malleshwari , Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal and Sakshi Malik. Cheers erupted before tens of thousands of TV sets in India and congratulatory messages from people ranging from President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Arvind Kejriwal flooded social media. A rare tweet even came from superstar Rajinikanth.
