Kool_SRG
Rio 2016: India men's hockey team beat Argentina 2-1 NEW DELHI: India men's hockey team defeated Argentina 2-1 in their third Pool B encounter at the Olympic Hockey Centre on Tuesday to climb to joint top with Germany in the standings with two wins to their name.Manipur's Chinglensana Kangujam scored the opening goal for India in the eighth minute and the lead was doubled in the third quarter by another Manipuri player -Kothajit Khadangbam.Similar to their second game against Germany on Monday, in which India faltered and conceded a last-gasp goal to concede the game, the VR Raghunath-led team played a jittery final quarter with Argentina reducing the deficit via penalty corner goal by Gonzalo Peillet early in Q4. With less than eight minutes to go, Argentina earned a barrage of penalty corners but India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made three crucial saves to deny drag-flick specialist Peillet. India just about managed to stave off Argentina to register a close win. This is the first time India have beaten Argentina since 2009. India started the match aggressively and earned their first penalty corner of the match in the 7th minute when defender Ramandeep Singh hit the leg of an Argentinean defender inside the circle. Rupinder Pal Singh's flick was blocked, but in the next minute India got their second PC and this time Chinglensana found the net to hand India 1-0 lead in the first quarter. India got lucky in the dying minutes of the first quarter, when Argentina were denied by the post. Top Comment bravo manipuris! good game. indian team must stay aggressive. all the best!Prashant Saxena In the next quarter, Argentina looked in better rhythm and were on the charge. While India dominated the play in Q1, the lion's share of possession in Q2 was enjoyed by their opponent. Argentina got close to a goal in Q2 but a fantastic block by Sreejesh helped India maintain their one goal advantage going in to the long break. In the third, India got the better of Argentina and Kothajit Khadangbam doubled the lead scoring a field goal five minutes in to the third quarter. In the final quarter Argentina clawed their way back into the game and dominated the proceedings. Their sustained pressure inside the D led to as many as four penalty corners, but Sreejesh put aside his disappointment of conceding a goal against Germany with three seconds left on the clock, with three brilliant saves to keep India ahead. Das first blanked Jit Bahadur Muktan of Nepal 6-0 in the round of 32 encounter and then kept his composure to prevail over Cuban Adrian Andres Puentes Perez 6-4 in a thrilling clash. However, the road ahead is full of challenges for the 24-year old from Kolkata as he is now up against South Korean archer and a former world No. 5 Lee Seung-Yun in the1/8 eliminations clash. Lee was a part of the victorious South Korean outfit that won gold in the team Recurve event at the ongoing Games. The 1/8 eliminations are scheduled to be held on August 12. What was impressive about Atanu was the manner in which he held his nerve during his last shot in the fifth and final set. The score was 19-18 and a '10 pointer' would have ensured his place in the last eight even before his opponent had aimed for his final strike. Atanu did not disappoint as he hit the 'Bulls Eye' taking an unassailable lead and winning the final set 29-28. The score in his favour was 28-26 29-26 26-27 27-28 29-28. Earlier in the day, he made a short work of the Muktan in three straight games with a comprehensive scoreline of 29-26 29-24 30-26, enjoying a fair lead in all three sets including a hat-trick of Perfect 10's in the final game. Kool_SRG
Rio Olympics 2016: Jitu Rai Disappoints In His Favourite Event 50m Pistol Jitu Rai started the qualifying round brightly, but a score of 88 in Series 6 proved to be his undoing, as he slipped out of the eight qualifying positions to finish a disappointing 12th HIGHLIGHTS 1Jitu Rai failed to qualify for the men's 50m pistol final 2Rai finished a disappointing 12th in qualifying 3Prakash Nanjappa too disappointed with a 25th place finish Jitu Rai, one of India's biggest medal hopes at Rio 2016, failed to qualify for the final of the men's 50m pistol event, after finishing a disappointing 12th in the qualifying round. He scored a total of 554. Rai had begun the qualifying round brightly, scoring 92 and 95 in the first two series. However, a score of 90 from Series 3 saw him drop out of top 10. The Indian shooter bounced back with scores of 94 and 95 in Series 4 and Series 5, respectively, which saw him climb up to the fifth spot. It all seemed to be going fine for Jitu Rai until this stage, but disaster struck in Series 6, where he could only manage a score of 88. The final series meant he finished with an overall total of 554, which was just two short of the last-placed qualifier. Having missed out on a medal in the 10m pistol event, Rai's campaign at Rio 2016 has come to and end. On the other hand, Jitu Rai's compatriot Prakash Nanjappa too disappointed with a 25th place finish in qualifying. His total score was 547. Kool_SRG
India archer Bombayla Devi through to pre-quarters of women’s individual event Bombayala Devi beats Taipei's Shin-Chia Lin 6-2 to enter the pre-quarters of individual archery event Before the match against Shin Chia-Lin, Devi beat Austria’s Laurence Baldauff in the women’s 1/64 individual elimination event on Wednesday. (Source: PTI) India’s Bombayla Devi beats Taipei’s Shin-Chia Lin 6-2, and boos a spot in the pre-quarts of the women’s individual archery event at the Rio 2016 Olympics. It was a game of complete control for the Indian archer who won three sets, as compared to her opponent’s one. Before the match against Shin Chia-Lin, Devi beat Austria’s Laurence Baldauff in the women’s 1/64 individual elimination event on Wednesday. After a disappointing team campaign, India finally had a reason to cheer as their archers continued to put up a good show in individual events. It was Atanu Das on Tuesday, and Devi on Wednesday. Indian archer wasn’t off to an ideal start as she lost the opening set 24-27. She, however, in varying wind, got her act together with consistent scores and pocketted the next three sets 28-24, 27-23, 26-24. Earlier, in the team campaign, India were up against world champions Russia in the quarters and the trio of Laxmirani Majhi, Bombayla Laishram, Deepika Kumari did well to test the formidable unit and take them to shootoff but they would have been disappointed with the result since they were two sets up after the end of the first three sets. Russia showed why they are the world champs as they not only sealed the fourth set, but also the shootoff to book a semi-final spot. There is some scope of improvement for the Russian unit as the competition only gets tougher in the medal rounds ahead. Earlier, India women’s team faced tough opposition from Colombia in the pre-quarters round of the women’s recurve archery event but eventually came out on top to set up a quarterfinal contest with Russia. The final scoreline read 5-3 in India’s favour with the contest coming down to the final set and even the last two arrows, which the Russians sealed with ease.
