Well not with Chevy Camaro, but recently had a similar experience with my 2007 Nissan Altima.  One auto shop guy asked for $1000 to change all 4 brake pads and rotors.  My immediate thought was the quote seemed way too high.  Just to check how much the parts costs, I called up Autozone and O'Reileys....they said for all 4 brake pads and 4 rotors might cost around 250 dollars.  At the same time I called up a local auto repair guy (ofcourse a desi!) how much he would take to change the pads and rotors...he quoted 240.  In total, it would have costed my less than 500, which is half of what was quoted initially by high end auto mechanic shop.

So the next day I stopped by Autozone and picked up the parts for 240 and asked him if he knew any guy who could replace these.  He gave me two local mechanic guys.  When I called the first guy and asked him for a quote he said he will charge 200 bucks.  I went to him the same day (evening) and go the brake pads and rotors replaced with the new parts.  All in all it costed me around 450 dollars and few phone calls.

I also called the desi guy and cancelled the appt.  He was thankful that I called him back to inform.

Hope this helps!
