Yogeshwar Dutt, who failed to win a match at 2016 Rio Olympics, has some very good news. His London 2012 Olympics bronze has been upgraded to silver after the second-place finisher's, the late Besik Kudukhov (60kg) of Russia, sample tested positive for a banned substance.

In a tweet, Yogeshwar said his medal has been upgraded from bronze to silver. "Today morning I came to know that my Olympics medal has been upgraded to silver. I dedicate my medal to all my countrymen," he tweeted.

As per Russian agency, flowrestling.org, the four-time world champion and two-time Olympic medallist Kudukhov's, who had died in a car crash in 2013 in southern Russia, sample tested positive for a banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

As a result, Yogeshwar, who had bagged a bronze medal in men's 60kg freestyle category in London Games, will move up from bronze to silver and join Sushil Kumar as another silver medallist from the 2012 Olympics.

"If a medallist has tested positive for a banned substance, then it is a standard procedure to give his medal to the next best athlete. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has to inform the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), International Olympic Committee (IOC) and United World Wrestling about the development. It might take some time for Yogeshwar to get the silver medal," Jagdish Kaliraman, former Indian wrestler, told NDTV.

When Yogeshwar, who had bowed out in the first round of men's 65kg freestyle at the recently concluded Rio Olympic Games, would be handed a silver medal will be confirmed only when the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) gets it in writing from the World body (UWW).

Before the Rio Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) re-tested Kudukhov's sample, which was collected during the 2012 London Games. Samples are now stored for up to 10 years to use advanced testing methods to catch dope-tainted athletes.

In 2012 Games, Yogeshwar lost his pre-quarterfinal to Kudukhov. The Russian wrestler reached the final, and Yogeshwar got another opportunity to win a medal in the repechage round. In repechage he beat Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico, Masoud Esmaeilpour of Iran and Ri Jong-myong of North Korea to clinch bronze.

Virender Sehwag’s epic take on Yogeshwar Dutt’s silver upgrade

Yogeshwar Dutt is set to get his bronze medal upgraded to silver. Here's how Virender Sehwag reacted on Twitter.

Virender Sehwag, who remains quite active on social media, didn’t hold back his emotions while expressing his excitement on the silver medal upgrade for Yogeshwar Dutt. Well, he had a number of other reasons to be excited about, too.

The two-match T20 series between India and West Indies in Florida, which saw a record 489-runs scored in just 40 overs, also left an impression on the former India batsman. These were not the only reasons for his excitement. Former teammate and close friend Ashish Nehra, who had previously expressed not so fondness for smartphones, had also got himself a brand new phone.

Sehwag took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, on Tuesday morning to post, “Wah !Cricket upgraded in US, NehraJi upgraded to smartphone and now #YogeshwarDutt ‘s 2012 bronze likely to be upgraded to silver. #Upgrade”

Indian Olympic medallist and wrestler Yogeshwar might have had a disappointing stint at the recently concluded Rio 2016 Olympics, but he has something to lift up his spirits. Dutt’s bronze medal, which he won at the 2012 London Games, is set to be upgraded to silver. The unexpected upgrade has been triggered by a positive dope test of the silver winner in the 60-kg freestyle event in London – Russia’s Besik Kudukhov.

Yogeshwar also remains active from his social media handles and we may have to wait till his response to Viru’s epic take on his silver medal tweet.

In London, Yogeshwar had lost his pre-quarterfinal bout to Kudukhov. When the Russian wrestler reached the final, Yogeshwar got another opportunity for a podium finish in the repechage round – he defeated Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico, Masoud Esmaeilpour of Iran and Ri Jong-myong of North Korea to claim bronze.

The standard practice, which involves re-testing of samples stored for up to 10 years to allow the use of advanced testing methods to weed out dope cheats, conducted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has now paved the way for Yogeshwar to join the ranks of wrestler Sushil Kumar and shooter Vijay Kumar as silver-medallists for India.

Not sure if I should be happy about London silver after Rio loss: Yogeshwar

the recently concluded Rio Olympics, says he has some good news to share with the country. But he is not sure whether to be “happy or sad”.

After reports suggested that Dutt’s bronze medal from the London Olympics maybe be upgraded to silver, the grappler tweeted on Tuesday that “he wanted to dedicate” the honour to the country.

The development came after Russia’s Besik Kudukhov, who finished second in the 60-kg freestyle event in the 2012 Olympics, tested positive for a banned substance, reports said.

Dutt told HT that he did not know whether he should be too elated since the news came close on the heels of his poor show in Rio.

“Don’t know whether to feel happy or sad about this news,” said the 33-year-old wrestler who lost to Ganzorigiina Mandakhnaran of Mongolia in the first round in Rio.

“The Russian wrestler who won silver is dead now. I have never thought of such things, to get benefits out of someone’s misery. But I have been told of the reports of him failing the dope test. But it has not been made official yet.

“London was four years ago, it is my past. Now I’ve been told my medal will become silver. It doesn’t change much for me,” he said.

The wrestler, however, felt the news will make his supporters happy.

“It will be some good news for my supporters, fans of wrestling and the country who were all disappointed by my loss in Rio this time. Even I was very disappointed, you work hard for years and then you fail to perform when it matters,” he said.

The International Olympic Committee has been retesting samples collected from the Beijing and London Olympics using enhanced techniques to expose dope.

Besides Kudukhov, Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan, who won gold in the 120kg division in Beijing, and three other wrestlers have failed the tests.

The Wrestling Federation of India says they have yet to be notified about Dutt’s upgrade, but they are expecting a communication soon from United World Wrestling, the governing body.

Kudhukhov, who died in a car crash in 2013, had beaten Dutt in the pre-quarterfinals in London. The Russian progressed to the final, where he lost to Toghrul The Indian reached to his medal glory through the repechage route.

Dutt said his next big tournaments will be the Asian Championships scheduled to be held in New Delhi next May and the World Championships to be held in Paris in August.

“Next Olympics is out of question for me so my next big focus is on the Asian and the World Championships,” he confirmed.
