Yogeshwar Dutt’s London Olympic medal may turn to gold

Abhinav Bindra, India’s sole individual gold medal winner at the Olympics, may soon have company.

Yogeshwar Dutt is likely to get the gold medal in the 60kg category for the London Olympics after sources said the winner in 2012, Azerbaijan’s Toghrul Asgarov, had been caught in the dope net.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been retesting samples collected from the Beijing and London Olympics using enhanced techniques to expose dope cheats.

Asgarov had won silver in the 65kg category at the Rio Olympics.

As per sources, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is yet to officially communicate the news to the United World Wrestling (UWW). Once that happens, the result will be updated.

Yogeshwar’s samples, taken during the 2012 Games, will also be tested before confirming the upgrade.

When contacted, a top Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) official said he was unaware of the development.

It will be a double delight for Yogeshwar, who was informed earlier this week that his bronze would be updated to silver after the late Besik Kudukhov of Russia, silver medallist at London, tested positive after his samples were re-tested.

Yogeshwar had a poor run in Rio as he crashed out in the first round against Ganzorigiina Mandakhnaran of Mongolia.

On Tuesday, when news of the upgrade to silver came in, Yogeshwar said he did not know whether to celebrate or be sad, but said the news would cheer fans, who were disappointed by his show at the Olympics.

Kudukhov, who died in a car crash in 2013, had beaten Yogeshwar in the pre-quarterfinals in London. The Russian progressed to the final, where he lost to Asgarov.

On Wednesday, Yogeshwar tweeted that the medal should stay with the family of the deceased wrestler. “Besik Kudukhov shandaar pehelwaan the. Unke mrityu ke baad dope test mein fail ho jaana bahut dukhad hai. Main khiladi ke roop mein unka sammaan karta hoon (Besik Kudukhov was a great wrestler. It is sad that the dope test result has come after his death. I respect him as a fellow wrestler).”
