Just when the people were beginning to talk how good the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is turning out to be in its inaugural season, an ugly incident happened on the cricket field during one of its matches on Thursday. The incident involved a physical fight between two cricketers and saw intervention of senior cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, who was visibly angered by it. It happened during a match between Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG) and Dindigul Dragons (DDD) in Chennai, when the bowler picked up a wicket in the high-voltage clash and then exchanged a few words with him and even got physical.

The match was keenly contested one, in which the CSG beat Ashwin-led DDD by 6 runs. During the tight run chase, CSG spinner R Sai Kishore dismissed DDD batsman Jagadeesan Narayan, who while trying to go after the bowler got caught by Antony Dhas at short third-man. After the dismissal, both the batsman as well as the bowler got into a verbal spat which turned physical when Sai Kishore pushed Jagadeesan. This did not go down well with Ashwin, who was present at the non-striker end. The Team India off-spinner rushed to intervene and stopped his teammate Jagadeesan who wanted to give it back to Sai Kishore.

An animated Ashwin then asked his partner to immediately leave the ground as the umpire too came into the act and separated the two. Ashwin then shifted his focus towards Sai Kishore and gave him a piece of his mind. He spoke some heated words to the bowler and at this moment, the CSG skipper R Sathish and his team-mate Thalaivan Sargunam came in to calm down Ashwin. Things appeared to cool down before the Indian cricketer walked over to the CSG huddle in which the players were celebrating the wicket and once again said something to the bowler Sai Kishore.

At the post-match press conference, Ashwin and CSG skipper Sathish tried to play down the incident by maintaining that it happened in the heat of the moment and there is nothing more to it. The two captains suggested that it should be buried there itself and the focus should be back on cricket. However, a report in DNA suggested that the matter has been taken to the match referee, who will take a look at the incident and decide the future course of action. The players involved may be fined or get a ban, depending on the outcome of referee’s inspection of the matter.

Whatever happens now, the fact remains that it was an ugly incident which brought shame to cricket. Such things should never take place on the cricket field as the game has invariably known as ‘Gentlemen’s sport’. Talking about the match, it was a cliffhanger. Batting first, the CSG scored 172 for the loss of 6 wickets from their stipulated overs. In reply, Ashwin’s DDD faltered at the end despite his valiant 23-ball 49, which included four sixes and as many fours. Ashwin, whose side ended up on the losing side, did play a veteran’s role in the match when he tried to break the feud and vented his anger.
