Thread intention is to inform that lot of areas flooded with water and normal life got disturbed. So army entered to help people.

There is no wrong intention here unless you came here to defend KTR.

Hyderabad: Army in action, scores moved to safer areas

HYDERABAD: With city bracing for more rainy days, a team of 480 Army personnel got into action on Saturday to provide aid and rescue people at various badly-inundated locations.

Rains continued to batter parts of city on Saturday leaving hundreds of people marooned in their apartments for the fourth consecutive day. At a meeting held in the morning, the Army officials met senior Greater Hyderabad i Municipal Cor poration (GHMC) officials to proure maps and detailed information on the ground situation.

Soon after the meeting, Army personnel along with city police and GHMC officials got into action. "Through radar maps of rainfall, we identified four key areas which needed immediate aid - Alwal, Hakimpet, Nizampet and Begumpet.

Several houses in these areas were identified to have been flooded with drainage water. Since most of these houses built alongside nalas, were built alongside nalas, drainage water seeped into them," GHMC commissioner Janardhan Reddy told  STOI. According to GHMC figures, 147 people were shifted by the joint action team of GHMC, Army and police. Twelve lakes and 10 nalas were found to be overflowing. Forty students in a school bus that was stuck in the flooded Alwyn Colony were also rescued.

Although less than 2 cm rainfall was recorded in the city till 6 pm, the slight dip failed to provide much relief to residents of areas such as Malkajgiri, Uppal, Shahpur Nagar and Bala Nagar as they continued to struggle through kneedeep water. Although food packets were made available by NGOs and social organisations, people struggled for clean drinking water and medical aid. "A few NGOs did distribute food packets and blankets in our locality, but we did not get enough drinking water for the family," said Neeraj Bhanu, a Nizampet resident, whose family boiled water stored in a plastic tank.

With water levels continuing to rise, several residents vacated their flats and moved to safer locations. "Water got into the lift of our building. Then, the ground floors got inundated," said Naveen Kumar Janjili, resident of Nizampet who shifted to Miyapur in the early hours.

Similarly, medical aid was hard to come by as people had to stay indoors with rains not letting up."The water has been stagnant in our area for over three days. I can't buy medicine for my wife, who has high blood pressure, as all medical shops in the vicinity are closed," said Prasad Macherla, a resident of Alwal, who was assisted with medical aid only in the evening.

The GHMC set up 29 medical camps in the affected areas and treated 3,901 people. Fumigation and anti-larvea drives were taken up in Yadav Basthi, Sevalal Nagar and Nagarjuna Colony in Moosapet and Fatehnagar. The GHMC also continued with its drive of demolishing dilapidated buildings.
