A few months ago, Apple acquired a Hyderabad-based startup named Tuplejump Software Pvt. Ltd. for an undisclosed amount to expand expertise in artificial intelligence.

This is Apple’s first acquisition in India. A machine learning company, Tuplejump works on unique software for faster storage, processing and analysis of big sets of data.

The company was founded in 2013 by Rohit Rai, a software engineer; Satyaprakash Buddavarapu, an engineering manager at Apple; and Deepak Alur, the head of engineering at a cloud-based business planning platform. The trio have bachelor’s degrees in computer science engineering. Rohit and Satyaprakash have already joined Apple.

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” a company spokesperson told Tech Crunch.

According to reports, Tuplejump was working on “FiloDB”, an open source project to apply machine learning concepts on complex data, and Apple was interested in it.

In his visit to India in May, Apple CEO Tim Cook had announced that the company’s first development centre in Hyderabad will work on Apple Maps.
