While the informal text communication channels like SMS and personal messaging applications have provided us with the freedom to write in Indian languages for some years now, formal email communication has been restricted to English. Well, not anymore. In a revolutionary move in email communications, the company Data XGen has launched the world’s first free ‘linguistic email service’ in eight Indian languages, under the name DATAMAIL.

Not only will this email service allow people to write emails in Indian languages, but it will also make available email addresses in those languages.

According to a Deccan Chronicle report, DATAMAIL is the world’s first linguistic email service supporting IDN (Internationalised Domain Name) in Hindi (हिन्दी), Gujarati (ગુજરાતી), Urdu (اردو), Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ), Tamil (தமிழ்), Telugu (తెలుగు), Bengali (বাংলা) and Marathi (मराठी). Along with the Indian languages and English, the company will also offer email addresses in three international languages: Arabic, Russian and Chinese.

The company aims to expand the email service to 22 Indian languages eventually, which will be easy to download on any Android or IOS mobile devices under the name DATAMAIL.

“The linguistic email service will allow people from across the country to communicate in eight regional languages and in English language to provide ease of connect and bridge the digital divide among Indians,” Ajay Data, founder and CEO of Data XGen Technologies Pvt Ltd., said at the media launch.

Citing the Global Internet Report, Data pointed out that India ranks 139th in internet penetration, while being one of the countries with largest language diversity.

“This gives a clear picture that India should look for digitalisation in line with the language diversity to increase penetration since mobile broadband access is expected to be corrected with reforms and competition in the telecom industry,” he said.

He also added, “With 220 million users, India is now world’s second-biggest smartphone market, which is further expected to grow very fast. Now with the connectivity of internet, Indian population has become digitally equipped but there are other factors that require to be taken into the consideration for achieving greater digital and mobile connectivity. The issue of language is extremely critical, which remains largely unaddressed and therefore DATAMAIL can break this clutter and lead Digital India dream.”

Citing an IAMAI report titled Proliferation of Indian Languages on Internet, Data also mentioned that 89% of the Indian population is a non-English speaking segment, yet Indian languages account for less than 0.1% content on the worldwide web. The new email service can certainly prove to be a first step towards filling this wide gap.
