How to recover failed drives

Is it the drive or something else?  Sometimes, a drive failure isn’t a drive failure it can be the cables that connect the drive with the computer’s motherboard that have come loose. Make sure the data and power cables are firmly connected on both ends.

Printed circuit boards?  Sometimes hardware connected to the drive can fail such as the printed circuit board (PCB). In theory you can simply swap the PCB boards but if you’re unsure you might want to get an expert to do it – if you don’t know what you are doing you could inadvertently wipe all the data on the drive.

Take the drive out and connect to another computer – and then copy the data. If you’re certain that the drive has crashed you can remove it from the computer and connect it to another computer as a secondary drive. You can do this using a USB to IDE/SATA adapter.

If you can browse the contents of the drive it probably means that the operating system has been corrupted and the data on the drive is fine. If so you can try and copy the data from the failed drive to the drive on the computer you’re connected to.

Data recovery software. If you can’t manually copy the user data off the drive then you can try to recover it using data recovery software. There are many recovery software versions available but don’t install the software on to the drive that you are trying to recover data from. You could end up overwriting files that you want to restore.

If you’re not technically minded it might seem a little daunting to use recovery software. But if you can find your way around a computer, the instructions that come with recovery software will be straightforward.

The software below is just a small sample of what is available:

  • Recuva is a free hard drive recovery tool from Piriform. If the basic scan fails, there is also a deep scan to discover more deeply-buried results.

  • GetDataBack provides a demo version that allows you to see what files it can recover. If you like what you see you can purchase the full version.

  • PC Inspector File Recovery has been around a relatively long time and is widely regarded as good recovery tool. It’s available in different languages. It also allows you to restore files that have been permanently deleted from the drive as long as they have not been overwritten.
  • EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition reconstructs lost files, regardless of whether they were deleted accidentally or are inaccessible due to a crashed hard drive, hardware failure or virus infection.
  • Undelete 360 is a free version of a commercial product. It is simple to use: point it at a drive, it’ll scan for deleted files, then you can view particular file types by choosing them from a tree.
  • Wise Data Recovery is probably one of the simplest data recovery tools available. There are no complicated options or dialog boxes all you do is choose a drive, click Scan, and wait as the program locates any deleted files.

A warning

Hard drives are sensitive bits of hardware and can easily be damaged if you pull them out of their casing.  If you’re not sure or feeling confident it’s probably a good idea to go down to your local computer shop or contact a data recovery specialist.

And finally – recovering deleted data from Recycle bins

While we’re on the subject of recovering data from hard drives its worth mentioning that it’s also possible to recover data from Recycle bins. We’ve probably all dumped files in the recycle bin, emptied it and then a later date wish we hadn’t.

Many of the publishers of tools mentioned above provide recycle bin recovery software too. There’s a great article here from TheTechMentor.com that provides a list of software with some simple step-by-step guidelines
