Rohit, Rahul and Dhawan to miss first two England Tests

India are missing three major batsmen - openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan, and Rohit Sharma - because of injures for the first two Tests against England. Allrounder Hardik Pandyahas been included in the Test squad for the first time in his career.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma returned to the 15-man squad after missing the Test series against New Zealand because of an illness. Bhuvneshwar Kumar had recovered from the hamstring injury he suffered during the second Test against New Zealand but was not picked because he had not played a first-class game since.

Rohit sustained an injury to his upper thigh during the ODI series against New Zealand, and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, and might need surgery too. That put him out of the series. There was no like-for-like replacement for Rohit, which could mean a debut for Karun Nair or Pandya in Rajkot unless India play five specialist bowlers.

Gautam Gambhir, who scored a second-innings fifty in his comeback Test against New Zealand in Indore, was set to continue as the opener for the first Test at least. He had returned to the Test squad because of the injuries to Rahul and Dhawan. Rahul missed the last two Tests and the ODIs against New Zealand because of a hamstring injury, and Dhawan was ruled out for the third Test and the limited-overs contests because of a thumb injury.

Fast bowler Shardul Thakur was dropped from the squad after coming in as a replacement during the Tests against New Zealand. That he would concede his place once Ishant regained fitness was expected.

India's injured

  • Rohit Sharma - injured thigh during fifth ODI against NZ. Out for six to eight weeks
  • KL Rahul - injured hamstring during first Test against NZ. Missed the remaining two Tests and ODIs.
  • Shikhar Dhawan - dropped for the first Test against NZ, fractured thumb during second Test, missed the third and the ODI series.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar - recovered from hamstring injury suffered during the second Test against NZ, but not selected because he has not played first-class cricket since

What was not expected was the selection of Baroda's Pandya, who has played just 16 first-class matches and taken 22 wickets at an average of 33. He has already played four ODIs and 16 T20 internationals. He featured in the 2016 World T20, and was the Man of the Match on his ODI debut.

MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, saw Pandya bowl on India A's tour of Australia, a tour that first paved his way into the ODI side and now into the Test squad.

"Pandya's pace has increased, he is moving the ball, his batsmanship has improved," Prasad said. "And he has mellowed down as a person. He is one allrounder we thought is an equally competent bowler and batsman. And a good fielder too.

"Rahul Dravid has worked hard on the mental side of his game. Now Anil Kumble is guiding him. We have three allrounders - Stuart Binny, Hardik Pandya, Rishi Dhawan. In this particular series, he scores ahead of Binny. Much quicker and better bowler than Stuart. With form and fitness, Hardik is a better option."

India are presently the No. 1 ranked team in Tests, following their 3-0 victory against New Zealand. The first Test against England is in Rajkot from November 9, and the second in Visakhapatnam from November 17.

Squad Virat Kohli (capt.), R Ashwin, Gautam Gambhir, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Mohammad Shami, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Karun Nair, M Vijay, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ishant Sharma, Jayant Yadav

Anderson's absence could extend to December

England may be without James Anderson for the first three Tests in India as he continues his recovery from the shoulder injury which has hampered him since midway through the English season.

Anderson has not been included in the 16-man squad for the five-Test tour which is unchanged from the group currently in Bangladesh.

Alastair Cook had already said that Anderson would miss the opening Test in Rajkot and a decision over the involvement of him on the tour will be taken in the coming days, but it is understood that the Mumbai Test which begins on December 8 is now seen as his earliest return date.

England Test squad for India tour

Alastair Cook (capt), Moeen Ali, Zafar Ansari, Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball, Gary Ballance, Gareth Batty, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Ben Duckett, Steven Finn, Haseeb Hameed, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes

Speaking after the first Test in Chittagong, England coach Trevor Bayliss gave a positive outlook on Anderson. "The medical staff are very pleased with how he has come on in the last week or so. He has had more scans and is looking good. They haven't given any indication of when he might be available, but definitely out for the first Test in India."

He was described as "the difference between the sides" by India captain MS Dhoni after England won the 2012 Test series between the teams, but it seems increasingly likely that England will have to learn to live without him.

When Anderson spoke to ESPNcricinfo earlier in October, he was confident over his recovery. "I'm not going to miss the entire trip, no," he said. "I'm very confident I'm going to be involved in the India series, it is a frustrating injury, something I want to get right, but it does happen in cricket, in sport, you get injured, you've just got to deal with it, and hopefully I can get as fit as possible as soon as possible."

While there might have been a case for calling up another spin bowler for the India tour - England had two seamers (Steven Finn and Jake Ball) and one spinner (Zafar Ansari) on the side-lines for the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong - the England team management have suggested they are likely to retain faith in a six-man attack involving three seamers and three spinners.

Mark Wood, the Durham fast bowler, who was part of the original squad for Bangladesh remains unavailable having required another ankle operation.

Saqlain to help England spinners on India tour

Former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq will join up with the England squad on November 2 as they prepare for the Test series in India.

Saqlain made a good impression in a brief stint as England's spin bowling consultant during the home Test series against Pakistan. The ECB made no secret of their desire to utilise his experience ahead of the series in India but had expressed some concern over whether they could secure a visa for him.

With that issue now resolved - it is understood he has a 15-day visa - he will join the England squad in Mumbai ahead of the first Test in Rajkot on November 9.

England hope that Saqlain can help England's relatively inexperienced spin attack prepare for a series in which they will be required to play a substantial part. Gareth Batty, Adil Rashid and Zafar Ansari have played just 14 Tests between them - in Batty's case, seven out of eight came more than a decade ago - while Moeen Ali admitted on Friday that he was "nowhere near where I want to be as a spinner."

It may also be that Saqlain proves of benefit to England's batsmen. During Mushtaq Ahmed's spell as spin-bowling consultant, he helped the batsmen work out methods of attack against spin bowling.

Saqlain, who claimed 208 wickets in a 49-Test career, has previously had spells as a spin consultant with New Zealand and West Indies.

The England Test squad has not had a dedicated spin-bowling coach since Mushtaq left the role in early 2014.
