Germany Unveils World’s First Zero-Emission Train That Emits Steam

The first-ever passenger train powered completely by hydrogen, which was unveiled at Berlin InnoTrans Trade Show, is all set to be introduced in Germany. The train Coradia iLint has been developed over the past two years by French company Alstom.

The Coradia iLint emits excess of steam into the atmosphere and provides an alternative to the country’s 4,000 diesel trains. The hydrogen train operates using a hydrogen fuel tank which is installed at the roof of the train which in turn powers a fuel cell to produce an alternative to the diesel trains which are still used in Germany.

The testing is to be carried out by the end of the year and then it will be opened up for the public in December 2017. The train which was first presented at Berlin’s InnoTrans show in August is said to be the first hydrogen powered train. It will regularly ferry people over long distances, as reported byIndependent.

Netherlands, Denmark and Norway have also showed their interest in the train. Because of its much larger fuel capacity, the train does not have to face the same problems which hydro-cars face with refueling. Even at its top speed of 140 km/h, the only noise is that produced by the motion of the wheels and air resistance.

“Alstom is proud to launch a breakthrough innovation in the field of clean transportation and It also shows our ability to work in close collaboration with our customers and develop a train in only two years.” said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, CEO Alstom, as reported by Independent.

The hydrogen power works when hydrogen is burned with oxygen to produce huge amounts of energy, with the only byproduct being water.
