coming across a policeman holding a rifle on a railway station, patrolling the area to ensure everything’s in order, is a regular sight. But spotting a policeman with a book and a pen, teaching children on a railway platform? That is an intriguingly unusual sight!

Gaya Railway Police have taken up the mission to educate the rag-picking children from nearby slum areas on the platforms of Gaya railway station. A policeman, Praveen Kumar, has been given the duty of teaching the children and he is helped by fellow policemen when required.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the initiative has been taken up by the Railway Police officers with the aim of helping rag-picking children from nearby slums who are deprived of a proper education.

Now that the initiative is seeing an enthusiastic response from the children who turn up every day for the ‘classes’, Kumar has been directed by his seniors to teach them regularly. He said, “The DSP and the inspector also do the same for these kids.”

“We are rag pickers, but now we are studying here. I wish to get into the police service some day,” said Suman, one of the children taught by the policemen.
