Rajawat told The Indian Express later in the evening that it was an “off-record” bit of conversation with “some journalists” and alleged that they are presenting “distorted comments”.

BJP MLA from Ladpura in Rajasthan’s Kota district Bhawani Singh Rajawat has purportedly claimed that “Ambani and Adani” had prior knowledge of the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, as shown in a video released online on Wednesday.

“Adani, Ambani atram-satram in sab ko pehle hi pata thha. Inko hint de diya gaya. Unhone apna kar liya (Adani, Ambani and others knew it beforehand. They had been given a hint and they made arrangements accordingly),” Rajawat purportedly said in the video.

Rajawat told The Indian Express later in the evening that it was an “off-record” bit of conversation with “some journalists” and alleged that they are presenting “distorted comments”.

“I did not say any of those things being shown in the video,” he claimed.

About the quality of new currency notes, which have attracted criticism from some quarters, Rajawat allegedly said in the tape, “The new currency note is third class. It feels counterfeit.”

Critical of the sudden announcement by PM Narendra Modi and implementation that has seen long queues outside banks and ATM kiosks, the BJP MLA purportedly said, “Poori currency aap print karte. Desh ki abadi aur uske anupat mein currency print karte, uske baad mein aap ek saath.ab petrol pump ki keematon ki tarah aaj 12 baje 500 aur 1000 ka note band ho jayega. (First you should have printed the new currency as per requirement. But like announcements of change in petrol prices, you announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 are invalid from midnight).”

Denying the conversation, Rajawat told The Indian Express, “Some journalists… came to my Kota home today for a bite on demonetisation, as I had visited villages in my constituency on Tuesday. But unethically they recorded an off-record conversation.”

Watch: Adani, Ambani had prior info on demonetisation, says BJP MLA Rajawat

Ruling BJP legislator Bhawani Singh Rajawat stirred controversy when he was caught on camera criticising the Narendra Modi government’s decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes and alleging that industrialists Gautam Adani and Ambanis had prior information of the demonetisation decision.

However, when the video was broadcast on a news channel, the Ladpura (Kota) legislator denied he had given any such statement.

Some channels ran a video news in which Rajawat was seen talking to journalists in Kota that “Ambani-Adani ko pehle se pata tha aur unko hint de diya gaya aur unhone apna kar liya” (Ambani and Adani were given hints of demonetisation after which they converted their money).

In the video, Rajawat also criticised the quality of new Rs 2,000 denomination, which he said appears fake on touching it.

“Adequate currency should have been printed prior to the demonetisation move keeping in view the population,” Rajawat was heard saying in the video.

Rajawat’s controversial jibe came at a time when opposition parties were accusing Modi government of giving prior information of demonetisation to industrialists and black money hoarders.

Rajawat refuted giving any such statement to media. “I was just chatting informally with some journalists but did not give any statement against demonetisation,” he told Hindustan Times.

He, however, said demonetisation was affecting farmers due to currency crunch but the move would certainly fetch black money.

This is not the first time when Rajawat is in trouble for his controversial jibe.

He was earlier accused of threatening people to give votes to the BJP in the Kota Municipal Corporation election in 2014 and had questioned the role of coaching students from Bihar studying in Kota behind the alleged murder of a student from the state.

Couple of months ago, the three-time MLA from Ladpura had talked about gunning down the crocodiles that he said had been troubling the people of his constituency.
