That is not exactly loan cancellation. For the sake of fiscal relief, they moved these loans which are not getting repaid, and hence cannot generate interest to NPA status. Non-performing asset. The loans will still be pursued. Freeing this up from the books means more loans to people who actually deserve it to set up businesses or buy homes.

I am not sure if this is true or just a conspiracy theory. This is what I read in an article. Higher denomination notes ni obsolete cheyadaniki main reason is to save the indian banking system from collapsing. These big banks mostly public like SBI gave out lot of bad loans to business people that funded politicians (mostly congress) and also bjp during elections and as favor received huge loans from public banks. These loans couldn't recovered and the banks are on the edge of collapsing. So the recent move will force all the people to deposit money in banks giving banks a temporary security and time figure out the mess they are in.

 

This theory was convincing for me.
