New Delhi: The hopes of the two Telugu States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were shattered with the announcement by the Union Minister of State for Home, Hansraj, that there will be no increase in the Assembly seats in the two states.

TDP member TG Venkatesh raised the question in the Rajya Sabha today. He wanted the centre to state the Center’s stand on the proposals sent by the Telangana government on increasing Assembly seats. Reacting to it, Hansraj made it clear that there was no possibility of increasing Assembly seats till 2026 in Telangana state. He further said that increase of Assembly seats in the two States would not be possible in the near future, as it required amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution.

The Home Minister further made it clear in the written answer that the increase of Assembly seats in the two States was not possible till the amendment of the Article, as it clearly mentioned that there would be no delimitation of constituencies till 2026.
