Plano Telugu Family (mom and child) among 3 killed in crash near St. Louis

A mother and young son from Plano were among three killed in a wrong-way crash west of St. Louis early Sunday morning.

Five more were injured in the crash, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol

Just before 4 a.m. Sunday a driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 44 when his sedan struck the front left corner of a 2013 Toyota Sienna minivan driven by Sushma Settipalli, 32, of Plano.

Settipalli and her 2-year old son Mahidhar died at the scene.  The driver of the other car, Robert Bastson, also died.

There were seven passengers in Settipalli's van. All seven were wearing seat belts, according to officers.

Ratnakur Settipalli, 39, and his 4-year old daughter Keerthana were taken to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries.

News of the accident began to spread in the Plano apartment complex the family lived in on Sunday.

Chandu Rayalla says he would see the children play often outside their home, just across the parking lot.

"This is so painful to our community, as well as our family," Rayalla said.  "It is very hard.  This is a very painful time."

Friends of the Settipalli confirmed to News 8 that the family was returning to North Texas from Thanksgiving with relatives in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dinesh Jonnadula says he has known Ratnakur Settipalli for over a decade and was visiting with the family just a few weeks ago.  He fondly recalled a New Year's Eve party last year where he took a family photo he shared with WFAA on Sunday.

"It's very tragic," Jonnadula said by phone.

Chinmayee Gullapalli, 23, of Atlanta, Ga., and Vaishnavi Yerneni, 22, of Houston were hospitalized with moderate injuries.  Tagore Gullapalli, 21, of Plano, suffered minor injuries, according to an online crash report.

One of the bad day in my life. morning levagane first vacchina news.. literally was shocked for few minutes.

he was my collegue in 2012. last year atlanta lo kalisam. Very Sweet family. RIP to his wife and younger kid.

He is very nice guy. Present thana situation critical ga vundi. Praying for him.

Night time easy gaa confuse avutharu and drive into wrong lanes. Cant blame him completely unless he is drunk. especially rural roads where highway signs are confusing.
