Actually that history was debunked. It's unnatural for someone to give back any territory the king he defeated the kingdom back, especially in those days. When such a thing was never done for any other king, why is it that it was only done in case of Purushottham. 

 

Alternate view of history is that he was actually defeated by Puru who halted his advances, Alexander made a deal with him to retreat as a consequence of which he couldn't get past modern day Punjab province. His army was severely weakened in the battle and his favorite horse Bucephalus died as well, plus Puru was a minor king who had upto I believe 1000 elephants for battle. Alexander was informed that if he were to advance into Central India the Nandas had more than 10,000 battle elephants who were ready for the war. 

His army became mutinous as they were fighting a losing battle and weary to go back home. He died due to illness and injuries sustained in the battle.

Yes most Western historians say Puru lost but Alexander gave him back his Kingdom. That's very very unlikely and has no precedent in Western history. So for Alexander alone to have done that out of the blue is although possible not so plausible. 

Puru winning the battle however would make it a lot more sensible. After all, Puru was defending his territory and wasn't trying to expand his territory like Alexander. So he has no reason to kill Alexander since there's no question of capturing Alexander's kingdom here.
