Kool_SRG
Kevin Pietersen, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir and Mitchell Johnson were some of the big names released by their Indian Premier League franchises. A total of 63 players were released while 140 were retained by the franchises for the 2017 edition. Former England batsman Pietersen was picked by newcomers Rising Pune Supergiants for R3.5cr at last year’s auction but played only four matches after a calf injury ruled him out. Retired Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, who hasn’t played any cricket since the three matches for Kings XI Punjab which fetched him R6.5cr, has also been released while South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn, who is out of action due to a shoulder injury, has expectedly been cut by the Gujarat Lions. Kool_SRG
Monday also saw the fallout from last year’s splurge on uncapped Indians. Delhi Daredevil’s Pawan Negi (R8.5cr), Rising Pune Super Giants’ Murugan Ashwin (R4.5cr) and Mumbai Indians Nathu Singh (R3.2cr) all got the cut. The then-uncapped Negi, most expensive Indian last year, had disastrous returns of 57 runs and a total of nine overs fetchinh just one wicket while Nathu didn’t even play a match. M Ashwin, however, got seven wickets in 10 matches. The Pune franchise in fact released 11 players, the most, including India pacer Ishant Sharma, all-rounder Irfan Pathan, Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera, South African Albie Morkel and Australia’s former T20 skipper George Bailey. Along with Negi, the Delhi franchise released Nathan Coulter-Nile and Imran Tahir while Mumbai Indians released the Kiwi duo of Corey Anderson and Martin Guptill and also let go of Delhi batsman Unmukt Chand. Kolkata Knight Riders released Morne Morkel, Brad Hogg, Shaun Tait and Jason Holder. The two finalists from last year decided not to tinker around with the set up too much. Bangalore retained the powerful core of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle along with Shane Watson, Mitchell Starc, Adam Milne, Shane Watson and Stuart Binny. However, Indians Varun Aaron and Parvez Rasool got the cut along with David Wiese and England all-rounder Chris Jordan. Champions Sunrisers Hyderabad let go of Karn Sharma, Eoin Morgan and Trent Boult but retained Yuvraj Singh (R7cr) who scored 236 runs in 10 matches. Kings XI Punjab too decided to gamble on Glenn Maxwell, despite the Australian’s horrid last season which got him 179 runs in 11 matches. Kool_SRG
Players released 11 (six overseas) Players retained 16 (five overseas) Purse spent INR 469,000,000 Purse remaining INR 191,000,000 At a glance Rising Pune Supergaints released the most players among all the IPL franchises ahead of the 2017 auction after finishing second from bottom last season. They offloaded a lot of their seamers and overseas players and will need to replenish those stocks. Kevin Pietersen, their most high-profile player to get the axe, had played only four games in the 2016 season before he was ruled out with an injury. Kool_SRG
Players released 8 (one overseas) Players retained 16 (six overseas) Purse spent INR 516,500, 000 Purse remaining INR 143,500,000 At a glance Dale Steyn suffered a shoulder injury during South Africa's tour of Australia in November and was cut from the Gujarat squad; he played only one game for them last season. Gujarat retained the core of their squad -and most of their overseas players - after finishing top of the league stage in 2016. They released seven Indian players though, so their local contingent will need beefing up.
Kool_SRG
Players released 4 (three overseas) Players retained 19 (five overseas) Purse spent INR 426,500,000 Purse remaining INR 233,500,000 At a glance Despite winning only four out of 14 games and finishing bottom of the league in 2016, Kings XI released only four players - the fewest among all the teams - and retained 19. David Miller was still listed as their top contract - INR 125,000,000 - despite making 161 runs in 13 innings last season. So unless they make significant purchases in the 2017 auction, the largely same squad will be charged with the task of a better finish. Kool_SRG
Players released 9 (six overseas) Players retained 14 (four overseas) Purse spent INR 462,500,000 Purse remaining INR 197,500,000 At a glance Kolkata Knight Riders released six out of the ten overseas players in their squad and will need reinforcements. Morkel has had injury trouble for a while and is presently out of action for South Africa. KKR have released a lot of overseas seamers and might look to make a purchase to fill that gap.
