Daredevils coach Dravid rues loss of de Kock to injury

Delhi Daredevils coach Rahul Dravid has said missing a batsman of Quinton de Kock's calibre as well as the experience of JP Duminy will affect the balance and composition of the team going into tenth edition of the IPL.

Duminy has cited personal reasons for pulling out while de Kock has a finger injury, sustained during the Test series against New Zealand.

"It is obviously a big blow when you lose big players like JP Duminy and Quinton de Kock," Dravid told PTI during an interaction at Delhi Daredevils' academy ground. "If these things happen before the auction, then it is easier because you can plan better. But then this is how it goes and you cannot help it."

Dravid is banking on experienced international allrounders like New Zealand's Corey Anderson and Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews to fill Duminy's void but admitted that de Kock is a bigger loss, considering he was a player who could give the team momentum at the top of the order. He was also Daredevils' top scorer during the last IPL.

"We do have talented players like Sam Billings and hopefully they can go up and perform," he said. "We have allrounders like Corey Anderson and Angelo Mathews, so we hope that these boys can stand up and perform and in some way replace JP. But yes, Quinton is a big loss because he played so many games for us and was one of our main batsmen. We had built him up for this season, but this is how life is and you cannot do much about it."

Dravid is hopeful that the core group of Indian batsmen, including Shreyas Iyer, Karun Nair, Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant, will have a good season. Asked how he expects Pant's second season to be after an impressive opening season, Dravid said: "I hope it is better than last season from our perspective. I won't say Rishabh is our only X-factor. We have guys like Karun, Sanju, Shreyas and [Aditya] Tare.

"We will also look to strategise better and give the [younger] players a good opportunity. In a format like the IPL, it is also important to rest the players and keep them fresh and we will also look at that and give it our best."

Dardevils were in contention last season for a top-four berth till the last match, in which Royal Challengers Bangalore outplayed them. Dravid is hopeful things doing better this time around.

"We needed to win that one game and qualify for the knockout stages but unfortunately we did not qualify. But this time, we will look to start from where we left last season and try and improve further."

Dravid also feels that Zaheer Khan's decision to play from IPL to IPL will not hurt the team as the former India fast bowler is an inspiration. "We have a lot of youngsters in the team and that is where we needed Zaheer, as he brings in that knowledge and sense of calm in the dressing room. You need that when you are playing a tournament like the IPL. Also a lot of the youngsters look up to Zaheer as he is an inspiration."

De Villiers will lead RCB if Kohli is absent: Vettori

Virat Kohli picked up a shoulder injury during the RanchiTest against Australia.

AB de Villiers will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening stages of IPL 2017 if regular captain Virat Kohli fails to recover from his shoulder injury in time for the start of the tournament. While no timeline has been ascertained for Kohli's return, Daniel Vettori, head coach of the franchise, told reporters of the succession plan in the eventuality of the star captain missing out.

"He (Kohli) will come in on April 2. Between now and then, the BCCI doctors and physio will speak to us and our medical staff will get a clearer picture. Right now, we don't have a clear picture on his availability. We will know in the next few days," Vetorri told reporters in Bengaluru.

""The likely scenario is that AB de Villiers will take over the duties, but we'll answer that once we find out if Virat is out," Vettori added.

Kohli sustained an injury to his right shoulder while diving to save a boundary on the opening day of the Ranchi Test against Australia. The injury ruled the Indian captain out of the series decider in Dharamsala. In the aftermath of India's series victory, Kohli informed that he was still a few weeks away from regaining full fitness.

"It's still a few weeks to go before I can be 100% on the field," Kohli said at the end of the Dharamsala Test. "But these things happen in your career. Got to take it in my strike and move forward."

Kohli's absence, brief or otherwise, should it come to that, is likely to significantly hamper RCB's quest for a maiden IPL crown. The league's all-time highest run-getter (4110 runs at 38.41) has missed just one game for the franchise in the nine years of the tournament's existence. In 2016, Kohli aggregated a season record 973 runs in RCB's run to the final, where his team was pipped at the finish by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

However, Vettori was quick to back RCB's UP batsman Sarfaraz Khan and Punjab's Mandeep Singh to step up in Kohli's absence. "Fortunately, we have a number of exceptional batsmen who haven't got many playing chances, like Sarfaraz Khan and Mandeep Singh," the former New Zealand skipper said.

"It's a huge asset for us that someone else can fill in those gaps. Sarfaraz has been really good. At the back end of the domestic season he started to put some runs on the board. Everyone knows how talented he is. With possible injuries, he could get an opportunity early on in the tournament," Vettori added.

RCB will get the tenth edition of IPL underway on April 5 in a rematch of last year's final at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Ashwin to give IPL a miss, Vijay doubtful

Ravichandran Ashwin, the India offspinner, is set to miss IPL 2017 for Rising Pune Supergiant because of a sports hernia. Ashwin is likely to be out of action for six to eight weeks, but is expected to regain full fitness ahead of India's title defence at the Champions Trophy in June. He is scheduled to begin his rehabilitation soon.

M Vijay too is in danger of missing the tournament for Kings XI Punjab because of a wrist and shoulder injury that he has played with for a better part of India's home season. It is likely that Vijay may have to undergo a shoulder surgery. The franchise is awaiting a report from India phsyio Patrick Farhart before taking another step in the matter.

Ashwin, 30, has had an unprecedented workload during India's marathon home season that featured 13 Test matches against New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia. During the period, Ashwin bowled 738.2 overs - the most ever by a bowler in a Test season - and picked up a record 82 wickets. Along with Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin claimed 153 wickets at an average of 24.14 to become the most successful bowling pair in a season.

Ashwin first picked up the injury immediately after the Test series against England in December. In the aftermath, he withdrew from Tamil Nadu's Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Karnataka.

Shoulder injury sidelines Rahul from IPL

Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman KL Rahul will miss IPL 2017 with a shoulder injury he sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. According to a source from within the team, he will soon be travelling to London to undergo surgery.

It is understood that Royal Challengers had been looped in on Rahul's situation and were prepared for his imminent injury-enforced exit from the tournament. The 24-year old had hurt his left shoulder five weeks ago, in the first Test against Australia, but continued to play through pain for the rest of the series.

During the second Test in Bengaluru, when he made two match-winning fifties, Rahul spoke about how the injury restricted him from playing extravagant strokes.

Overall, with six half-centuries from seven innings, he finished the third-highest scorer on either side with a tally of 393. Along with Cheteshwar Pujara, Rahul was India's batting mainstay, helping them win back the trophy. In fact, he struck the winning runs in Dharamsala that sealed the 2-1 result.

Rahul is Royal Challengers' second major injury setback after captain Virat Kohli had also been ruled out for at least a "few weeks" at the start of the IPL. He was the team's third-highest run-getter in the last IPL, behind only Kohli and AB de Viliers, with a tally of 397 from 12 innings.
