Aviation Ministry Proposes Biometric Screening at Airports

Your thumb print might soon be all you need as formal documentation to enter airports and board flights. The aviation ministry is planning to introduce biometric screening at airports to help passengers enter just by flashing their thumbs, instead of presenting valid IDs along with tickets.

The idea is being implemented with the help of Aadhar cards. Over 100 crore Aadhar cards have been issued in the country till now, for which applicants had to submit their iris and fingerprints scans.

These scans have been fed into the national digital registry and can be used for biometric screening.

According to reports, the process will be extended to boarding domestic flights in the second phase.

The aviation ministry has already completed a pilot programme with biometric scanners at Hyderabad airport.

“We are examining the technical feasibility of asking people to give their Aadhar card numbers at the time of booking tickets. At airports, they can press their thumb for biometric identification; enter terminals and board domestic flights (for international passports will be needed),” a senior aviation ministry official told The Times of India.
