All airlines flying to US should provide the details of  travelers to DHS. They run checks on incoming passengers to look for anything abnormal. Unless DHS clears them, airlines cannot allow them to board the flight to US. I think this must be case of such flagging

Don't you think CBP/DHS can pull your visa info based of your passport number? They can pull all jatakam no...

i believe passport number is enough as everything is linked to it including the visa

they must have additional criteria  for example select * from travelers where university="XYZ".

They run checks on every passenger. ofcourse these checks are automated.
