Afghan woman beheaded for going shopping without husband

A woman was beheaded in Afghanistan's Sar-e-Pul province for stepping out of her house without a male guardian. The woman's husband is in Iran and they have no children, officials said.

A report in The Independent states that the 30-year-old woman was reportedly slain by members of the Taliban for the "infidel act" of going shopping alone on Monday evening.

The incident took place in the province's Lati village, which is under Taliban control. The ultra-conservative Islamist group prohibits women from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a close male relative, one among many regressive policies against women.

Provincial governor's spokesperson Zabiullah Amani said the woman was stabbed and decapitated using the bayonet of an AK-47 by men linked to the Taliban.

Never shy of using extreme force against those who transgress their radical interpretation of Islam, the Taliban has denied any involvement in the incident.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Restoring fundamental women's rights was one of the main objectives of the international community in Afghanistan after the collapse of the Taliban regime in 2001. This has proved to be an uphill task, with any advances in Afghan women's education and work rights being hard-won.

However, in recent years there has been an upsurge in violence and discrimination against women, with a 2011 Thomson Reuters Foundation poll naming Afghanistan as the most dangerous place in the world for women.
