97% Of Banned Notes Back In Banks? 'I Don't Know' Says Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

Virtually all the banned 500- and 1,000-rupee notes have been turned into banks, according to a report by Bloomberg. If that is true, it would suggest that the government's abrupt demonetisation drive has failed to uncover and destroy black money.

"I don't know" was Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's response yesterday when asked if the estimate is correct. The Reserve Bank of India said today that it is still collating and verifying information.

On November 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the highest-denomination notes would be illegal within hours; he set a deadline of December 30 to exchange or deposit the old notes at bank branches and post offices. The cancelled notes added up to 86 per cent of the currency in circulation or 15.5 lakh crores. With the deadline for turning in notes having expired, unnamed sources told Bloomerberg that 15 lakh crores have been accounted for in deposits.

Neither the government nor the Reserve Bank of India or RBI has officially disclosed how much of the junked money has been returned. On December 14, the RBI said that about 12.5 lakh crores had been deposited. "Now that the Scheme has come to an end on December 30, 2016, these figures would need to be reconciled with the physical cash balances to eliminate accounting errors/ possible double counts etc. RBI has already initiated this process and till this is completed any estimate may not indicate the actual numbers of the SBNs (Specified Bank Notes) that have been returned," the central bank said in a statement today.

On the last day of demonetisation, the RBI had asked all banks to report details of deposits of old Rs. 500 /1,000 notes after the close of banking hours.

The Finance Ministry said recently that it had asked for a recount to avoid double-counting.

Though PM Modi has been praised by experts and the public for his intent to crackdown on corruption and tax evasion, the cash shortage that followed demonetisation has been seized by the opposition to allege that it is the honest and common man rather than the corrupt rich who have been punished by the radical reform.

FM said he doesn't know, because they are busy trying to doctor the data in a way so that demonetization can be declared a success.

not divide and rule brother. Top lo unnollu (kshatriyas/brahmins/some shudras who were rulers etc) andaru paniki maalina yedhavalu. bottom lo unnollu, they cared just about themselves. because why should they care if a upper caste Hindu rules them, or a white guy?

Gandhi changed that, but then again he was not able to destroy caste. Inko 300-400yrs wait chey. appatiki India lo entha varaku Samudram lo untundho telidu.

Only hope is if Dalits pick up weapons and start defending themselves. Not if someone pretending to be from lower caste (Modi) becoming PM and putting the country through the same manuvadi nonsense that it had to bear for 100s of yrs.

Hindu society has been rotten for 100s of yrs now. With not much push for change towards being better even in these modern times.

Hindus have lost the moral right to dominate any large sovereign parcel of land (like India). The only reason they are still able to do so, is by coercion, and fake nationalism.

The only thing left to do is to, break apart, wither away like the Jews, or become a joke by trying to cling together, and becoming the world's poorest nation, with the most malnourished children etc, while some enjoy baristas.

how would he know the details before the intended math gets completed ? So you are saying a minister should know each and everything on top of his/her mind regarding the ministry ?  edo figure cheppatam kanna teledu ani cheppatam better. Every day we see ministers saying gazillion figures about schemes and money spent - do we even know that for a fact ?

wtf are you blabbering moron? 'intended math'? the amount deposited in the banks is just a number.

Yes. the minister should know. He lied about not knowing because he's ashamed to admit that this currency swap was a total failure. He hopes he can distort the numbers and give bhakts like you something to cheer about.
