Redgram price fall: who is the villain? Demonitisation or upcoming elections?

Redgram prices have fallen below Rs. 4000 per quintal while the Minimum Support Price announced is Rs. 5500. As per the Telangana govt it costs more than Rs. 7,000 to produce a quintal of redgram. its similar with other states too..

Redgram is a 180 day crop and average yield is about 4.0 quintals. so the total returns per acre would be around Rs. 16,000 which is less than Rs. 100 a day. it wont cover input costs, land rentals, or labor costs. if the cost estimation of telangana govt are taken the net income is negative.

Why did the price fall? NitiAyog and central govt says so impact of demonitisation. The area increase was moderate but severe drought has effected the crop too. so extra crop in the market to create glut too. Last year during the same time centre procured redgram at market prices (Rs. 6500 to Rs. 7000 per quintal).

To save face on the impacts of demonitisation and to safe guard the interests in the upcoming elections centre has kept stocks of the redgram and started releasing now...and this time there is no procurement.

All of you who are feeling happy that prices of redgram or for that matter tomato or onions has come down....just check they are carrying the blood stains of farmers
