There are few things I can say about this
1.You are hand picking the time periods that favor your argument. Nothing wrong but how many times have you been successful and how many times have you been unsuccessful with your hand picked stocks so far ?

2. Transaction costs: there are no transaction costs for most ETFs. For individual stocks, for a $1000 gamble, you have to be up by couple of % just to cover the short term cap gain taxes and brokerage fees. Long term gain taxes are almost half of short term taxes. brokerage fees are 0 for ETF transactions at some brokerages.

3. This graph doesn't take into account dividends reinvested. All this time your stocks are paying dividends and you are buying more stocks with those dividends. And if the stock market is down during this period it means you are buying even cheaper.

4. It doesn't take account of stock splits

you clearly said we can surely profit from indexes...then it should be working for any time frames i pick right? i don't understand what transaction costs you are referring to..the 5-10 which brokerage will charge?...what dividends are you referring to? and aren't capital gain costs same if you sell after 1 yrs or after 10 yrs? and what about the inflation?

That graph is for S&P index...why is stock splits getting into picture here..

It wont work that way in real life. Its not a single transaction that you buy the index and sell after 20 years. You buy many times contributing every month and every year. Only one out of the many transactions will match your 20 year no gain pick. because of the contributions over long run net result will be positive. You don't sell everything  say 500k in a single day  and time it to be the bottom of a recession. and where are you buying these stocks anyway ? what brokerage is providing free service to you and why are they doing it ? dividends.. when you buy index you are buying the underlying stocks which pay dividends. capital gain costs are same if you sell after 1 year or 10 years only if you are working for ever in your life. When you retire and have not work cap gain tax is 0 because you have no earned income. what is the question about the inflation ?
