40k CC debt is not a debt...You don't need any consolidation for this. I ma sure the credit score must have hit very badly. stay clam, take 3-4 months off, pay up bills on the cards and wait to get an increase on the cards or check with your bank for any kind of personal loan to consolidate credit card debt.

Gyan Time : Do not apply credit cards from different providers, Apply credit cards from one provider only and then move on to another one. For example, If you have your checking in CITIBANK, apply one credit card every six months and then see the difference. Citibank will offer you a credit card consolidation loan at the end of 2nd year at 7-8% APR. Then move over to different bank and repeat the same procedure.

i have checking account in citi and also CC ...what is credit card consolidation loan ? can i apply for that ?
