Hyderabad: A Telugu girl studying in San Jose State University was asked to return to India by the US authorities last week.

The student, whose name is being withheld, had to return to Hyderabad after immigration and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Force questioned her repeatedly for hours together, before she was asked to leave the country. According to information culled from different sources, the student was in the third semester of her MS course in San Jose State University and had come to city on a brief holiday. After she landed in San Francisco airport, she was taken to a room and questioned.

Her phone was taken away by the officials, who had repeatedly questioned as to how she was meeting her expenses. The authorities told her that the subject she had opted for her last semester wasn’t being offered by the university. “Sorry ma’am, you are not allowed into the US. You can talk to your university, but you have to go back now and return after 30 or 40 days,” the officers told her.

Asked to comment on the development, Gayam Narsi Reddy, an expert on US Education said: “Right from admission till a student completes the course, entire information will be available in the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System. The SEVIS is available with university, college and immigration department. Any change in the course should be informed to the college and changes made in SEVIS accordingly. Even if one per cent of information on SEVIS is contradicted, students will be sent back.”

According to sources, even for H1B and dependent visa holders, it isn’t a cakewalk to gain entry into the US now. The number of questions and period of quizzing has gone up. The officials were posing questions to elicit information on whether the H1B candidate got employment directly from a company or through a consultancy agency and on the prospective period of stay in the United States.

In respect of some persons who landed in the US with H1B visas, US authorities allowed to stay after brief questioning. Similarly, those who went to the US on dependent visas also did not face much problems, sources pointed out.
