Yes those areas with very high population of desis is an exception. It will remain an exception for the foreseeable future.

Agreed. Hard to see universities/NCAA having a cricket teams or offering scholarships.

Exactly my point. No sport becomes popular without the nurturing at the grassroots level i.e., university scholarships and endorsements.

I have worked closely with my university's sports teams esp. Football and I know how much a sports popularity and financial funding influences athletes to pick that one up over others.

Cricket cannot gain popularity in USA. No way it can breach mainstream sports popularity. but over the years, I have seen this sport gaining popularity atleast among desis

In Virginia,DC, MD. People used to play cricket on the weekends as a leisure sport but over the years, Now they manage an entire tournament being held every weekend all through the summer. Now, this league is being organised professionally with paid stadiums, local sponsors, team managing, and i think last year the prize for winners was 10k..and for the final match, about 1000 people turned up at the stadium to watch and socialise...so, its more like a reason for gathering but what ever it might be as long as its making money out of the sport or leisure desi sport.

I spoke with a Amru about this who has some what interest in cricket. His argument was many of cricket games are decided by pitch and toss which is not fair. Unlike American sports where both the teams play in almost similar conditions.

Not only that the only form of cricket where they can dedicate enough time to watch it is a 20-20 event. In short an event where the batsman can hit any cross batted shot out of the park and the bowler just gets to be the batsman's whipping boy. I don't think there's a balance between batting and bowling in 20-20 the only form of cricket that still offers such a balance is Test cricket.

And no one has time to watch that in US. Your friends concerns while somewhat valid aren't totally indicative of how a game of cricket works.

That's what I am saying. It will be only relegated to desis watching and supporting it, it will never ever be mainstream in a million years.

A better way to encourage desi kids into sports is to encourage them to start playing baseball or football from high school level. Which 99.999% of desi parents don't do, I think that's a better start than sending them to spelling bees and geography bees.

Well said. I don't understand what's the earth shaking contributions these bees do to advance the cause of Indian diaspora in the US.

Except perhaps validate the stamp these kids already have about being super nerds.

parents are busy making money...I personally seen many Indian parents who just ignore their kids, send them to day cares, don't look after them, etc. and these are the same parents who never played a sport or with an opinion that sport doesn't fetch you anything and stress their kids only to get good grades...in this process, they completely forgot that they are not in India and good grades aren't guaranteed how much ever youo force your kid to get good grades..

Yes typical desi parents mentality, what they couldn't achieve they want to force their kids to achieve.

End of the day by marginalizing them they are just alienating their kids from the mainstream American society. Anduke papam aa confusion vallaki, can't blame the kids. It's the parents fault for doing so.
