Invest in stocks+treasury bonds+low risk portfolios

 

with 100k you can also think about buying (or mortage with downpayment) a house for RENTAL or commercial purpose..

i am not 100% sure but this is what i heard from my realtor.. people from china buy properties in usa they dont live here and rent out that propeties ..but they make purchases with cash..so not sure if banks will be after us if our visa expires as got it in mortgage..but if you want to see after going back to india..it is very easy in US..you just need to sign one document to realtor and he will complete everything on your behalf...

OP, I tried Lending Club but got hit by quite a few defaulters. Did not like that and have stayed away since. Of course it depends upon the grade of the loans as well, but somehow i did not like the fact of prospective defaults.

You decide what your time horizon is and risk tolerance as well. Based on that you can decide the asset class. As far as mutual funds are concerned, for taxable accounts, it is better to go with equivalent ETFs(Exchange Traded Funds). ETFs are better from a taxation point. You can google this for more information. Tax free Municipal bonds can also be looked at.
