The Eerie Abandoned Monuments of Former Yugoslavia

In the 1960s and 70s, former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito wanted to commemorate WWII battles sites and former concentration camp sites with grand structures. By the 1990s, the Republic had dissolved, the structures were abandoned and “their symbolic meanings were forever lost.” They once portrayed the confidence and strength of the Socialist Republic with their powerful, brutalist style and visual impact. But in their current state, these structures portray a more eerie message. Once all power is abdicated and the gory excitement is gone, what is left can be seen as an honorable regression to silence and non-action.
