The Former Badminton Star Who Now Shuttles Between Many Things

She still shows signs she was a star shuttler. She is brisk; she is always up and about; she handles her campaign workers with quick commands and dispatches them home.

It is 10 in the night, but her long day shows no sign of ending. This is understandable because she is after all the rani of Amethi. In her cavernous office, Ameeta Singh nee Modi is resplendent in a bright yellow sari. Even the sandals she wears are of the same colour and very flashy. The fan hangs from a rickety long pole from a terrifically huge ceiling straight on top of a centre table on which are placed three plates of samosas and rasgullas and matthis.

Brown-coloured sofas surround the table and it is on one of these the rani sits handling media and hangers-on. Her middle-aged face, with a big red bindi on her forehead, seems so far away from all the b&w photos of the time she was married to the murdered badminton star Syed Modi. Her current husband, the Raja, is still in a far-flung place stumping for her.

Sanjay Singh, despite the army of workers waiting for him outside his office, shows no signs of returning. Inside, the rani holds court. This time she is in a tough fight with the former rani, who still occupies a portion of Sanjay Singh's palace. Garima Singh, Sanjay's former wife, has got a BJP ticket to fight from Amethi and is most likely winning. Ameeta talks of her using emotion to win votes, but does not go further.

As a gaggle of media men decide to shuffle out of her room, she too suddenly leaps out of her chair to pass a new set of instructions to her satellites.

DDCA Case: Kejriwal Asked to Appear Before Court on March 21

DDCA Case: Kejriwal Asked to Appear Before Court on March 21

New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was on Saturday directed to appear on March 21 before a Delhi court which granted him exemption from personal appearance for the day in a criminal defamation complaint filed by DDCA and Chetan Chauhan.

Metropolitan Magistrate Abhilash Malhotra allowed Kejriwal's plea for an exemption for the day as he is in Bengaluru for treatment and would return on February 22.

Kejriwal said in its application that his non-appearance was neither deliberate nor intentional.

The court also granted bail to suspended BJP MP Kirti Azad, who along with Kejriwal was summoned as accused in the matter, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of like amount.

During the hearing, Azad's counsel argued that the complaint was not maintainable as the Delhi High Court has appointed justice Vikramajit Sen as administrator of the cricketing body.

Advocate Sangram Patnaik, who appeared for DDCA and Chauhan, opposed it and argued that the plea was maintainable as at the time of filing of the complaint, Chauhan was the vice president of DDCA and he has also filed the plea in his individual capacity.

The court had on January 30 summoned Kejriwal and Azad, saying their statements prima facie adversely affected the reputation of the cricketing body and its officials.

The complaint has claimed that the defamatory statements were made by Kejriwal and Azad, who himself is a member of DDCA, "to remain in the public eye and gain political mileage".

"In an interview to a news channel, Kejriwal had alleged that apart from financial irregularities, there were other major wrongdoings in DDCA, including a sex racket," the plea has alleged.

While summoning Kejriwal, the magistrate had said it was prima facie clear from records that he made the defamatory imputation with a knowledge that it may harm the reputation of DDCA and its officials.

The court had also noted that the statement was broadcast not only on news channel, but also widely published in all national dailies and the Internet.

The allegation against Azad was that he endorsed the defamatory allegations made by Kejriwal and claimed he had raised a similar issue in 2007.

The court had on January 28 reserved its order on the plea after hearing arguments of the complainant's counsel on pre-summoning evidence.

The plea alleged that Kejriwal had made "scandalous" remarks against DDCA on television due to which the cricketing body and Chauhan have suffered an irreparable loss in the eyes of the public. It has claimed Kejriwal's "false" statements were immediately endorsed and repeated by Azad.

The court had earlier recorded Chauhan's statement during pre-summoning evidence in which he said his image, as well as that of DDCA's, had been sullied in the eyes of the public.

Mere Reservation Won't Satisfy Jats, Says Leader Yashpal Malik
All India Jat Reservation Agitation Committee National president Yashpal Malik talking to the media (PTI)

Chandigarh: “Getting reservation for Jats will not stop the agitation,” says Yashpal Malik, President of All India Jat Reservation Agitation Committee speaking to News18. Malik’s statement further complicates the difficult dialogue process with the state over the large scale Jat protest happening across the state of Haryana.

Will there be a repeat of last year? When News18 posed this question to Yashpal Malik measured his words while answering that no agitation is planned and Jats are gathering only for peaceful sit ins as a form of protest. Malik once again highlighted the seven Jat demands and said none of them is more or less important and all of these demands have to be met before the indefinite agitation is called off.

The state is on the edge as memories of February 2016 haunt it. Within a span of a few days 30 people had lost their lives in the violence that followed the demand for Jat reservation in the OBC category. Industry bodies estimated Rs 34000 crore loss to the exchequer.

The renewed agitation launched on January 29 has now entered its 21 st day. On February 19, Jats are planning a statewide “Balidan Diwas” to remember those killed last year. The state government has deployed a heavy police and paramilitary presence to prevent a repeat of last year.

The Haryana Government has formed a five member committee headed by the Chief Secretary DS Dhesi to talk with the Jat agitators. The next meeting is likely to take place after the February 19 “Balidan Diwas” passes peacefully.
