India May Meet Its Energy Needs From Moon By 2030, Says ISRO Scientist

There is enough helium on the moon to meet the energy requirements of the world, said ISRO scientist.

NEW DELHI:  India can look forward to the moon to fulfil its energy requirements, to go by the words of ISRO scientist.Sivathanu Pillai, a distinguished professor at the ISRO, said with conviction on Saturday the country would meet its energy requirements by 2030 through Helium-3 mined from the moon.

"By 2030, this process target will be met," Mr Pillai said while delivering the valedictory address at the three-day Observer Research Foundation (ORF)-Kalpana Chawla Space Policy Dialogue, organised by ORF.

Mr Pillai, a former chief of BrahMos Aerospace, said mining lunar dust, which is rich in Helium-3, was a priority programme for the ISRO.

He said other countries were also working on the project and there was enough helium on the moon, which can meet the energy requirements of the whole world, read an ORF statement.

"In a few decades, people will be going to the moon for honey-moon," he quipped.

Lt Gen P M Bali, Director General, Perspective Planning, Indian Army, said the launch of GSAT-7, India's first dedicated military satellite, is a testimony to the country's outlook towards using the outer space for the national security.

He noted that India possesses one of the largest constellations of communication and remote sensing satellites, covering Asia Pacific.

Lt. Gen. Bali added that although India continued with a civilian orientation to its space programme, the changing regional and global realities required it to develop military assets in space and on ground as an emerging regional and global power.

He said there was a need for a dedicated military space programme with adequate resources at its disposal because of, "the changing realities in our neighbourhood".

This contracting jobs don't pay much. The figures touted in newspapers ($300m) is false. The profits from these ventures are not high enough to sustain r&d activity.

govt must have a plan and invest heavily. The recent govt has cut r&d spending a lot.

most indians I see (upper middle class), are always crying about reservation. as long as they cry, nothing will happen.

Unless the govt invests lots of money, and contracts out these launch jobs, moon dream is doubtful.

india didn't build ISRO for launching other people's satellites. Its a waste of time.

i saw an interview of kasturirangan sometime ago where hes saying that ISRO should try to generate revenue from foreign sources instead of depeding completely on govt support which makes sense to some extent. but yeah, what u said is true - govt shud invest hell lot of money

ISRO can set up a private company (not Antrix which is held by the govt), and outsource all launches and contract proven indigenous tech to be improved further. That is what US does with SpaceX. We can have our own Elon Musk.

Foreign funding to space tech is not possible. These tech are not shared between countries that easily, and there's no commercial value (other than contracting jobs).

ISRO should spend its money pursuing worthier goals. Like their recent indigenous cryogenic engine, etc. These are something private companies (like SpaceX) won't be able to do, without access to the right funding and research.

ISRO is already the 3rd/4th richest space agency. Govt should focus on investing in other r&d sectors that will help ISRO source even more local products.

privatising public research - the magic to US's success.

I know its unfair. among the many unfair things men do to each other.

There's the Japanese model, that nationalizes everything. but Indians are not like Japanese. we are more like Americans.
