Brother, it seems you are either too innocent or too immature or probably a bit both. If you see anywhere around the world, public always go discussing by the end result of an incident, may be for celebrities or for some special events of public interest they may follow the news a bit more.

No one specifically puts efforts and time towards these things unless it really touched them and they really want the public to know the facts. So don't blame public man, this is the way it was during when we had all print media and now electronic media as well, it won't change and you cannot ask public to do what you want to do. Also, people take sides when they hear news, like in your case you are sympathetic towards the aggressor and taking their side and not the victim's side. 

Instead of blaming public and media if you feel the story is not true you should investigate and let us know why the media was wrong. That's the only right way not blaming public.
