A number means alien number, it is given only to people who applied for I-140.

A number will be given to H1B (I-129 petition) also if you applied for H1B extension/amendment or LCA  beyond 6 years based on approved i-140. Beneficiary Name and Number untadi chudu H1       i-797 doc meeda if your i-140 approved and applied to h1 extension beyond 6 years time
