When Xuanzang visited India c.1400 years ago, he found temples, new and old, everywhere. He found Hindu temples(devalaya) from Bamiyan to the very tip of Southern India Today, there is hardly any old temple in North India. The very few pre-Islamic temples are either ruined or belong to terrian that is scarcely populated and accessible only by difficulty What happened to Hindu temples? This pictorial presentation tries to answer the question

Picture was taken when British wrested this region from Afghans in 1878

The stupa belonged to Kushan period and was visited by Xuangzang on his way to India. It seems to have been destroyed and converted to a mosque during the reign of Ghanznavids

An Afghan man stands beside the excavated statue of great Kushan King Kanishka. At the Kushan temple near Surkh Kotal (Afghanistan) Although the ruins of the temple do not exist anymore, but the Rabatak inscription found just outside the site gives us a lot of information. Kanishka had built this temple in early second century CE. It housed gods such as Shiva(Oesho), Uma, Skanda as well as of host of Iranian deities It also had life size images of Kushan ancestors as well as the king himself. All the archaeological team could salvage at the site was this decapitated statue of Kanishka. It was subsequently moved to Kabul museum

This idol does not exist anymore. It was destroyed by Taliban in 2001

As one enters the old city Fondukistan in Afghanistan, once chances upon this ruin of an ancient fort whose only arch remains

This is a sculpture of Shiva and parvati and marks the entrance of a former Buddhist monastery of Afghanistan. The site yielded many sculptures and was artistically way ahead of its time. They are dated to early Shahi Period. The site was sacked by Mahmud Ghazni

When Xuanzang visited Taxila around 1400 years ago, he found a flourishing centre with numerous Buddhist stupas and Hindu temples These stupas and temples fell victim to the jihadi iconoclastic fury of Ghaznavids. Their ruins are dotted all over the erstwhile Gandhara region today called Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan.

No non-muslim is allowed into the holy city of Mecca. And no non-royal family member is allowed into kaaba.. so, the actual truth will never come out
