The president of Portland State University, Wim Wiewel, met with 10 prospective students last week in Hyderabad. But the get-acquainted visit turned into a counselling session, as the students expressed fears about coming to the US this fall.

A Muslim student said his father was worried that America had an anti-Muslim attitude. "Others said they were concerned about the 'Trump effect'." "The executive orders are having a chilling effect," Wiewel said, referring to the travel ban.

Like many universities, Oregon university is getting fewer international applications. Nearly 40% of colleges have seen decline in applications from foreign students, according to a survey by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars.
