Karna, Bheeshma, Vidhura, Ashwatthama

Karna: Most unfortunate character. A Great character gone wrong.  Abandoned by his biological mother. He was addressed as suthaputhra all his life, no teacher to learn archery from. He hides the truth that he is not a Brahman and learns archery from Parushurama (Bhargava Maharshi).Later gets cursed. Oh there are many curses that will ultimately decide his death. He chose a wrong path which he doesn't know that it is going to be wrong infact no one can guess such things. His desire was to get an identity
which Duryodhana provided. Fate defeated him all the time. He was indebted to friendship, Being bound to friendship and to prove his loyalty he had committed couple of shameful things: Calling Draupadi **, Killing of Abhimanyu.
At the start of the war when krishna asks him to join pandavas and says that he will be made king, he says that he cannot leave his friend  at the moment when he is most needed and second reason he quotes is he cant face Draupadi for the kind of words he used to address her. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest warriors. He only stands next to Bhishma. If people dont agree with me and claim Arjuna as the greatest archer let them say as everyone has their own hero and i have mine, I can quote few.

Another unfortunate character i think of in Mahabharatha is Uttara. Father King Virata gets killed, Husband Abhimanyu gets killed,
Her unborn child Parikshith gets killed by Ashwatthama using brahmashirasthra. Who was later brought back to life by Lord Krishna.

Bheeshma:
A man who is another greatest character of the epic.
Son of Ganga. A man who can choose his death. His mistake was being bound to his promise to serve Hasthinapur but not ruling, that itself indirectly was one of the reasons for Kurukshtra war. Had he broken his promise Duryodhana would have kept quiet. He had all the rights and authority to do so but he was only fulfilling his promise. I can talk more about him if people are interested. He is such a great warrior that Lord Krishna gets very furious at the inability of Arjuna to counter Bhishma to even a small extent and  picks up of a chariot wheel and in a rage wanted to finish off Bhishma (which Lord Krishna is not supposed to do as he promised that he will not fight in the war)

Vidhura:
Wisest of the wise and a great primeminister. He was among few who raised voice againt the henious act of disrobing Draupadi.
When ever krishna visited Hasthinapur he never stayed in the palace instead he used to have food at Vidhura's place and stayed at his place.
Vidhura is bound to dharma like Yudhishtara (both sons of Yama).

Ashwatthama:
A chiranjeevi, a cursed being still believed to be alive bearing the curse of Lord Krishna.
None can stand in front of him when he is in rage. He is a part incarnation of Rudhra (Lord Shiva).
Bhishma himself says that it is immpossible to defeat Ashwatthama when he becomes angry.

Of all the characters of Mahabharatha Ashwatthama's character draws my interest the most.
He was jealous of Arjuna as Drona was more inclined towards Arjuna than him. He found a friend in Duryodhan (who befriends anyone whoever is little against Pandavas). He kills the upapandavas when they are asleep as he was enraged knowing how Dronacharya was cheated and killed. He also wanted to make Duryodhan happy by killing pandavas. He sees upapandavas sleeping in their camp (some versions says he mistook upapandavas to pandavas in the dark) and murders them and also kills unborn child of Abhimanyu. These are the 2 sins that he has committed.
There is also a book called "Death Seeking Immortal" which i read it with utmost interest and my personal opinion is that the book is a very dumb one.

Infact i felt like writing my own version on Ashwatthama after i realized how badly his character was dealt by many modern authors :) you can imagine how much this character can influence people.

Please excuse my typos, a discussion on these topics is most welcome. I am very glad there are so many people who adore the greatest epic of all time.

barbarika--strongest warrior but didn't participate..thanks to lord krishna

Before the Mahabharata war began, Lord Krishna asked all the Pandavas how many days they would take to finish Mahabharata war alone. Bhishma answered that he would take 20 days to finish the war. Dronacharya replied that it would take him 25 days. When Karna was asked, he said he would take 24 days. Arjuna told Krishna it would take 28 days for him to complete the battle by himself. In this manner, Lord Krishna asked each warrior and received an answer.

Krishna disguised as a Brahmin, stopped Barbarika to examine his strength. When asked how many days he would take to finish the war alone, Barbarika answered that he could finish it in one minute. Krishna then asked Barbarika how he'd finish the great battle with just three arrows. Barbarika replied that a single arrow was enough to destroy all his opponents in the war, and it would then return to his quiver. He stated that, the first arrow is used to mark all the things that he wants to destroy. If he uses the second arrow, then the second arrow will mark all the things that he wants to save. On using the third arrow, it will destroy all the things that are not marked and then return to his quiver. In other words, with one arrow he can fix all his targets and with the other he can destroy them.
