The Thlen: Meghalaya's Very Own Demonic Serpent Is Absolute Nightmare Fuel

We're all scared of snakes, right? Their slithery scales, forked tongue and mean disposition are more of a reflection of our paranoia and distrust of snakes. This strange and almost paralysing fear can, somewhat be traced back to our pre-historic ancestors. We're talking about a time when we, as a civilisation, were still hanging on to our simian roots; back to a time when we were truly defenceless.  No weapons, no real protection to speak of. During these trying times, snakes were essentially the devil. Slithering their way into our homes and bringing with them the pain of a venomous death.

Even to this day, after our brains have evolved into the apex predator we are today, snakes occupy a certain, primal part of our consciousness. The part that is still scared of the dark, the unknown and the mysterious. So then we aren't surprised when tales and myths such as The Thlen, from the heartland of Meghalaya, are so intriguing and truly stand the test of time. Even as stories and legends, passed down through generations of fathers and sons.

It's a creepy little tale of a demonic serpent, laying siege to a small village that finally fought back and defeated the creature. It is said that The Thlen could have been a giant python but who really knows? I'd like to believe that there was some kind of giant, mutated snake, preying on the locals.

The giant serpent lived in a cave that was also very close to a path that the villagers would ply their trade on. This led to a ton of killings and disappearances until the villagers finally had enough and decided to do something about it.

Finally, a saviour from a nearby village came to their rescue. His name was U Suidnoh and he was there to kick some demonic serpent ass and take more than a few names, while doing it. He finally tricked the snake and managed to drop a red, hot piece of iron into the creature's mouth. In pain and slowly dying, the monster shook the earth with its death throes.

After the hellish ordeal, the villagers cut the snake up and devoured it to prevent the monster from regenerating itself. The hit the fan when an old lady saved a piece of The Thlen for her son, who was away at war. Over time, this tiny piece of flesh grew back into the dangerous beast and it was free to wreak havoc on the poor villagers. The creature then took the old woman as a follower and demanded human blood! The beast came back smarter and stuck to the shadows. Moving, twisting in the background.

The creature would recruit its own hitmen, called the Thlen keepers who would kidnap random victim and have another person beat them to death with a weapon that isn't iron, since what killed the original creature was a lump of iron! After they beat the victim to death, the keepers would cut off the eyebrows, earlobes, toenails, fingernails and lips with a pair of silver scissors. Holy *** !

The creature would then be offered its grisly prize and then it would reward the killers handsomely with gold and riches. Talk about some real creepy ! The North-eastern part of our country is a strange land with weird tales and even weirder myths and legends.
