MCD Election Results 2017: AAP which loses Delhi election, says 'this is not Modi Wave, this is EVM Wave'

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met his top lieutenants including deputy Manish Sisodia on Wednesday as his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appeared to be staring at an election defeat in Delhi just two years after it won a massive victory in state polls. Sources said the leaders watched the results live on TV together.

The BJP surged ahead while AAP was fighting the Congress for the number 2 spot as votes were counted for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi or MCD elections held on Sunday.

Within an hour of counting, Mr Sisodia arrived at the Chief Minister's home, followed by another minister, Gopal Rai. There were no crowds of volunteers as the AAP leaders hurried past the gates without speaking to the media.

Mr Kejriwal had held a meeting with party leaders and workers on Monday, a day after voting. Around 155 AAP members, who reportedly were at polling stations, went back to Mr Kejriwal with feedback from the ground.

According to the sources, the party is not expecting to come to power but is planning a big national campaign against what it alleges are tampered EVMs or Electronic Voting Machines. The party has ascribed a leading role to EVMs in its recent poll setbacks, including in Punjab and Goa.

The Chief Minister's adviser Nagendra Sharma tweeted:

Sweeping Delhi MCD polls without sweeping Delhi's streets for a decade. When machines are with you human will is of no relevance.

A loss today will mean a political wipe-out for the party.

BJP leaders said Mr Kejriwal and AAP should quit the Delhi government and go for fresh elections, taking the MCD results as an indicator of the public disapproval.

Former AAP leader Yogendra Yadav was scathing in his critique of the party that expelled him in 2015, months after winning the Delhi state election.

"What has changed between 2015 and 2017? The only thing is the AAP government's performance. People are angry with the Chief Minister and are electing the PM (Prime Minister Narendra Modi)," Mr Yadav said.

"I think if AAP loses, it should go for a referendum in Delhi and ask people if they still have their mandate."
