Work on suspension bridge to commence today

The Rs 184-crore project is planned to ease traffic congestion on the roads leading to Jubilee Hills Road No 36, Road No 45 and other stretches which lead to Hitec City, Financial District and Gachibowli areas which are home for several software and corporate companies.

Hyderabad: Works on the cable suspension bridge across Durgam Cheruvu at Madhapur which promises to address the traffic woes in Jubilee Hills and Hitec City areas will be launched by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao on Wednesday.

The Rs 184-crore project is planned to ease traffic congestion on the roads leading to Jubilee Hills Road No 36, Road No 45 and other stretches which lead to Hitec City, Financial District and Gachibowli areas which are home for several software and corporate companies.

The extradosed cable-stayed bridge will take off from existing junction near I-labs (Inorbit Mall end) and deflects to left near the parking area of Telangana Tourism Department and crosses over the Durgam Cheruvu lake.

From there, the bridge turns left near walking track of the lake and passes along the hillock and finally turns right and joins Jubilee Hills Road No.45 at Ambedkar Open University main entrance.

Explaining the benefits of the bridge, a senior official from GHMC said it would facilitate better connectivity between Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Hitec City, besides easing traffic flow in the areas. More importantly, the bridge would be integrated with the proposed elevated corridor on Road No.45 in Jubilee Hills to avoid any traffc congestion in the area, he said.

The scope of work includes construction of extra dosed cable stayed bridge across the lake including approaches at Madhapur with standard viaduct spans, crash barriers and other facilities.

The agreement period for completing the project is two years and is expected to be completed by February 2019. In case, the company fails to meet the deadline, penalty would be levied by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). This apart, the company will take up any repairs and snags for two years after completion of the works.


Tourism Prospects


Apart from easing traffic flow, the bridge is likely to enhance the tourism prospects at Durgam Cheruvu, which is also known as Secret Lake. Rama Rao had inspected the lake a few times in the past and wanted the lake to be developed as a tourist spot.

Accordingly, authorities have decided to take up beautification works with Rs 3.50 crore. Of these, Rs 50.80 lakh is to be spent towards clearing the water hyacinth in the lake, Rs 2.20 crore to be utilised for laying 2.20 km cycling track, constructing children park, yoga park and other works. A special Ganesh immersion pond, which will facilitate in immersion of 3000 idols, will be constructed with a cost of Rs 90 lakh.
