Today's question:

We have the tallest palms in the neighborhood, and they sway dramatically during storms.

Ever hear of palm trees being felled by wind and rain? If so, which direction do they fall – in the direction the wind is blowing? Or does some weird law of physics mean they fall into the closest object, such as the house?

Some weird law of physics might draw them to fall on the closest object? How do you people come up with ideas like that?

Palm trees are very interesting. I won't say that they never fall down, but it isn't very common.

Palms are more closely related to stuff like grass. lilies or even onions than to hardwood trees. Palm trees are monocots, and things like maples or oaks are dicots.

There are a bunch of differences between monocots and dicots. For one thing, the roots of monocots don't get thicker with age, and don't branch out much. Dicot roots get woody with age and branch all over the place.

Inside a palm tree are a bunch of vascular bundles made up of xylem and phloem tissue. Xylem tissue conducts water and phloem conducts nutrients. Each of these bundles is wrapped in a ring of cells called a bundle sheath. These bundles not only feed and water the palm, but they sort of act like reinforcing bars. They give the trunk of a palm suppleness and allow it to bend in the wind.

That's why when you see TV news people broadcasting from a hurricane-swept shore, you almost always see palm trees bending – but not breaking – in the wind.
