Helping them to stand on their feet for few months is ok man... there are many people who work odd and multiple jobs 7 days/week just for food and shelter..

recently Houston lo oka family ki ee situation vaste, they were able to spend max $5k, while remaining amt TANA vallu chuskunnaru..heard its about $15k in total

Total: may be $10000 this is my experience from 2014 when my friend passed away.

Details:

1) MAX: $3500 (Transporting body to Hindu funeral home new jersey from all the cities in USA  including flight charges)

Hindu funeral home new jersey will pick up the body from the airport.  

2) $5000 (Transporting  body to India including paper work (Will take care of Embassy Paper work) and flight charges)

Don't involve any Organizations during this process this is my suggestion.(call Hindu funeral home New Jersey for details)
