Ram Nath Kovind is 14th President of India

He defeats Opposition candidate Meira Kumar, garnering more than 65 per cent of the votes in the Electoral College,

Ram Nath Kovind was on Thursday elected as India’s 14th President.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee received an overwhelming majority of votes from the country’s lawmakers.

Mr. Kovind defeated Opposition candidate and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, garnering more than 65 per cent of the votes in the Electoral College, the Returning Officer for the presidential election Anoop Mishra announced.

The 71-year-old former Governor of Bihar, who will be the second Dalit to hold the top constitutional position, received 2930 votes with a value of 702044, Mr. Mishra said.

Mr. Kovind will be the first BJP member to be elected President.

Ms. Kumar, also a Dalit, polled 1844 votes with a value of 367314.

The Electoral College comprises Members of Parliament and members of Legislative Assemblies of all the States.

A total of 4,896 voters — 4,120 MLAs and 776 elected MPs — were eligible to cast their ballot. MLCs of States are not part of the electoral college.

While the value of an MLA’s vote depends on the population of his or her State, the value of an MP’s vote remains the same at 708.

The Vice-Presidenti election will be held on August 5.

While former party president Venkaiah Naidu is the NDA candidate, former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the Opposition pick.

President is elected through the votes of MLA's and MP's and is supported by a particular political party or group of parties. The PM is elected by the direct election by contesting LS seat before or sometimes after becoming MP. He generally accepts the recommendations of the PM before passing any ordinance. Similarly Governor is a representative of President in state governments. They also accept the recommendations of the CM. Sometimes when the President or Governor disagrees they can send it back to PM or CM for rethinking only but even President/Governor has to accept the recommendation of the PM/CM. So they have got less powers in Indian democracy. The election of President should also be direct and should have more powers than the PM only then the democracy of India can live longer and administration can be effective.

lol. historically obtuse darwinist knucklehead trying to sound intelligent by writing bullshit.

do you even know why presidentship exists in India, and why he's not elected through direct democracy?

you should stick to trolling and personal insults. you suck at that too, but you can get away with it.

Lol. treatment of Advani is nothing.

I'd love to see how Modi ends up. I'll be hale and healthy to witness how he'll be treated in the future by his own band of morons.

I think he'll be treated like a incompetent and corrupt fool, with every up and coming leader shouting insults at him, for the scams he did while he was PM. (which will be exposed in a couple of yrs).
